Target and Process Policies

Use Target and Process Policies for setting up policies for ingesting files from your system into a Vault. The policies automatically ingest data from primary hard disk storage into the Information Repository. A policy designates which files are ingested, how you want them ingested, and when - along with many other aspects of jobs. Policies contain process parameters that include media, data source, and data destination values.

Target and Process Policies provides all the tools for creating policies that run unattended on a scheduled basis. If you want to run a single job immediately or define a single job for a specific date and time in the future, use Target and Process instead of Target and Process Policies.

Keep in mind the following for Target and Process Policies:

Duplicate policy names are permitted.
If making changes to a policy after it has run, be sure to run a Full job to ensure that all of the files are ingested.
After creating a policy, be sure to back it up by exporting it. This enables you to easily restore (import) lost or corrupted policies. See Import or Export Policies for directions.

Element

Description

Policy Name

A policy name is required to perform incremental or differential policies correctly, and the policy name determines which files have changed from the last Full job.

Assign a policy name by using any combination of letters, numbers, symbols, and spaces. It is recommended to name the policy something meaningful, such as the date of the policy, or the name of the type of files.

Description

Type in the text box a description to help easily identify a  policy.

Source

Define the data ingest source.

Local File System - Ingest files from computers on your network. The view of files is set to reflect contents of the local computer.

Watch Folder - Ingest Job Control Files located in this specified folder. Once the folder is created and the policy is active, Target and Process Services will periodically check the Watch Folder for Job Control Files having the extension .jcf.

Job Control Files contains a list of files to be ingested and have a file extension of .jcf. It can also contain new settings for the policy. Any new settings included in the file will override any settings in the original policy. The Job Control File is deleted when the policy has finished processing it. Each Job Control File needs to have the same format as TgtProcSvc.cfg file. For correct formatting, see the description of a TgtProcSvc.cfg file.

Action

Define if and how data on your network computers are processed after ingested.

Backup - Ingests targeted files into the Information Repository. Files exist on your networked computer and in the Information Repository.

Move - Ingests targeted files from the networked computer's file system into the Information Repository. A copy of the file exists only in the Information Repository.

Workflow - Target and Process Policies

The following are steps for ingesting data through Target and Process Policies:

1.From your suite of product applications, open the Target and Process Policies application (TgtProcPolicies.exe). For further explanation of how to launch applications using different operating systems, see Getting Started.
2.If a policy does not open by default, create a policy. Before setting parameters and starting the process, a policy must be open.
3.The Target and Process Policies window opens by default with the Files tab in focus. Select data to include in the policy.
4.From the Target and Process Policies window, select the Criteria tab to define parameters for the data to ingest. Select also Target Parameters and add file and directory filters.
5.From the Target and Process Policies window, select the Processing tab to define video and file processing options.
6.From the Target and Process Policies window, select the Destination tab to define to what Vault, media, and storage pool data are ingested.
7.From the Target and Process Policies window, select the Scheduling tab to schedule recurring jobs or individual jobs.
8.From the Target and Process Policies window, select the Advanced tab to set options such as Pre-Process Commands, and Log Files Location.
9.Click Save to keep all policy settings and implement the policy.
