Search Digital Evidence

Previous Next  Print this Topic

A search for digital evidence will locate all of the files that fit the search criteria you enter.

The search is an "and" search, meaning that the more search parameters you specify, the smaller and more targeted the list of search results becomes. For example, searching for "the man" is the same as searching for "the AND man". Only content that contains both the words "the" and "man" will be found. If you want to search content which contains "the" or "man" or both, use "the OR man".

The following are instructions to give you a better idea on how to search for and select digital evidence for export using the Digital Evidence Manager tool:

1.Launch the Digital Evidence Manager.
2.The Digital Evidence Manager opens with the Search tab in focus. In the Search Criteria pane, begin your search for video by clicking the Select Search Type drop-down list for a list of search options. Work your way through the search criteria by entering values for the search block type.

Type multiple values into a given search option and separate each value with the vertical bar symbol |. The search will return items that match any of the added values.

Any Metadata Field

Type a value into the textbox to search any metadata field across the entire network. This works like a global search. Also choose from contains, does not contain, is equal to, and is not equal to from the drop-down list.

To add multiple values to this field, separate each value with the vertical bar symbol |. The search will return items that match any of the added values.

Asset Type

Search for a certain asset type. Choose from Video, Picture, Audio, or Regular File (any file that is not a video, picture, or audio track) from the drop-down list in order to limit your search to that type. Or choose Any and any asset type will be searched.

Vault Name

Limit your search to a particular Vault. Select the device from the drop-down list.

Storage Pool

Limit your search to only a specific storage pool. Select the  storage pool from the drop-down list.

Media Name

Increase the speed of your search by limiting the search to a particular unit of media. Select the media from the drop-down list.

Content

Search for a word or phrase that is contained in the file.

If you select Content, remember that Phoenix DEM supports content searching with wildcards, but only if a video script file has been ingested with the video. The video script file is necessary for searching content in videos because it includes all the video dialog and dialog time codes associated in the video. The name of the video script file is identical to the video file name. A content search can also be done on a closed captioning file that has been generated at ingest.

To add multiple values to this field, separate each value with the vertical bar symbol |. The search will return items that match any of the added values.

Pathname

Limit your search by typing either all or part of the filename you want to find.

To add multiple values to this field, separate each value with the vertical bar symbol |. The search will return items that match any of the added values.

Hostname

Limit your search to a specific computer. When a computer name is entered, only video stored from that computer is listed. This box may contain only a portion of the computer name, is case sensitive, and allows Wildcards.

To add multiple values to this field, separate each value with the vertical bar symbol |. The search will return items that match any of the added values.

Date and Time

Specify how dates are used to locate files. Use the drop-down list to choose from Most recent copy, Point in Time at, Modified before, Modified after, Modified between, Stored before, Stored after, or Stored between. Select a date and time by clicking on the Clock button.

3.Click the Add button to add more search blocks to your search (searches become more focused as more criteria is specified).

The image below is an example of the Search Criteria pane. It is displaying two search blocks defined and a third search block needing the search type selected.

Search Criteria pane

Customize your search for search types that are not currently available; use as many different search types as you need. Advanced users do this by creating a MetadataExtensions.cfg text file with search fields that are specific to your needs. If you do build this file, it must be ingested with the video in Target and Process. See MetadataExtensions.cfg.

4.After setting search criteria or typing a search phrase, click the Search button to search through the Information Repository for files that match the criteria you have defined. Results, including metadata, appear in the Search Results pane.

Search Results showing the VCM Search Results pane

If there are too many results, not enough results, or the wrong results, you can always re-define search criteria, add new search criteria, or remove search criteria, and then search again. If a thumbnail is not available, a placeholder image appears as a result.

5.From the Search Results pane, double-click on the thumbnail to view the content in the Media Viewer. See Media Viewer for details.

Alternatively, you can right-click on a video and choose from one of the many options in the drop-down list. These options are also available under Actions > Search Results.
